Gateway ports and corridor economics: what East Africa teaches the rest of the continent

An East African gateway port from the air

Mombasa and Dar es Salaam show that terminal efficiency is only half the story. The corridor behind the port decides the cost of trade.

01

Two gateways, two corridors

A small number of gateway ports carry most of the continent's containerised trade, and each depends on a road and rail corridor to the hinterland. East Africa shows it clearly.

  • Mombasa: the Northern Corridor to Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and eastern DRC.
  • Dar es Salaam: the Central Corridor to Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia and DRC.

The corridor behind the port decides the cost of trade.

02

Where efficiency is won or lost

A terminal can work its berths well and still lose the shipper's time inland. Port and rail plans drawn up separately leave trains arriving before containers are ready, or waiting for slots that never open. Inland terminals tracked on paper leave corridor capacity guessed.

Visibility across the whole chain, from quay to gate to corridor to dry port, is where efficiency is won or lost.

  • A shared plan between the terminal's release and train slotting.
  • Container and wagon status from quay to dry port, shared between port, rail and shippers.
  • Inventory and planning systems at the inland terminal itself.

03

What it teaches the rest of the continent

The same pattern holds at every gateway, from Djibouti and Durban to Walvis Bay, Lagos, Tema and Tanger Med. Terminal efficiency is only half the story. The investment that changes the cost of trade is the one that connects the port to the corridor behind it.
